Ingredients
- Buffalo sauce
- Hot sauce
- Butter
- White vinegar
- Worcestershire sauce
- Cayenne pepper
- Mayo (seed oil-free or homemade)
- Sour cream
- Garlic powder
- Dried dill
- Dried parsley
- Salt
- Ground black pepper
- Onion powder
- Dried thyme
- Low-fat cream cheese
- Cottage cheese
- Shredded chicken
- Blue cheese crumbles
How to Make It
- Craft Your Own Buffalo Sauce: I crafted my own buffalo sauce to minimize the number of preservatives in my family’s diet. While there are healthy versions available, I didn’t have any on hand. Creating your own buffalo sauce is both simple and delicious! Start by preheating a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the hot sauce, butter, white vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder. Stir everything together and heat it up until bubbles start popping around the edges.
- If you opt for a bottled version, skip Step 1 and add 1¼ cups of buffalo sauce in Step 2.
- Mix in the Creaminess: Lower the heat to low and add in the mayo, sour cream, low-fat cream cheese, cottage cheese, dried dill, dried parsley, salt, black pepper, onion powder, and dried thyme. Stir it all together until the cheeses melt and the sauce turns creamy.
- Add the Chicken: Once the sauce is all mixed up, stir in the shredded chicken. This is where the magic happens!
- Bake or Smoke:
- For the Smoker: I smoked my buffalo dip, and I won’t go back to any other method. If you have a smoker, pour the dip into an aluminum pan or another smoker-safe dish. Smoke for about 2 hours for that unbeatable flavor.
- For the Oven: I understand not everyone has a smoker, so I’ve included oven directions below as well. Preheat your oven to 325°F. Pour the dip into an oven-safe pan and bake for 30-45 minutes, or until hot and bubbly. It will still be incredibly flavorful if you choose to bake it instead!
- Serve It Up: Once it’s out of the oven or off the smoker, sprinkle with blue cheese crumbles and serve with cut-up veggies, crackers, or toast points. Get ready for a flavor explosion!
Why This is Healthier
Now, let’s talk about why this Buffalo chicken dip is a healthier option. Traditional recipes often rely heavily on cream cheese and sour cream, which can pack in the calories and fat. By substituting low-fat cream cheese and adding cottage cheese, you’re not only cutting back on calories but also sneaking in some extra protein and calcium. Cottage cheese is a fantastic source of protein and has less fat than cream cheese, making it a great option for a lighter dip.
Plus, using a seed oil-free mayo and incorporating herbs like dill and parsley not only boosts the flavor but also adds more nutrients. This dip still has all the deliciousness you crave from Buffalo chicken dip, but with a fraction of the guilt!
So, gather your friends, whip up this healthier Buffalo chicken dip, and dig in without any hesitation. You’ll love every cheesy, spicy bite! Enjoy!

It’s really good with cottage cheese.
