👩‍🍳 Confessions of a Ranch-Obsessed Former Denny’s Waitress

Back in high school, I slung plates at Denny’s as a waitress, and while the pancakes were a solid 10/10, my true love was the seasoned fries with ranch. Not just any ranch. We’re talkin’ the stuff we whipped up fresh every night in big ol’ batches. Just mayo and Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning, but oh man, it was chef’s kiss on fries, burgers, even the occasional sad little salad.

I say all that just to prove a point: I’m deeply committed to a good ranch seasoning. And this one? It’s my ride-or-die. It’s loaded with tangy powdered buttermilk, savory granulated garlic, onion powder, and smoky paprika (sweet or smoked, take your pick). There’s a little heat from cayenne or chipotle powder, plus a herby trio of dill, parsley, and tarragon, rounded out with chives, salt, and cracked black pepper. Basically, it’s magic in a jar.

I use it in my Ranch Turkey Burgers and as a rub for my Rowdy Ranch Chicken Wings. Both are delicious.

Stir it into mayo and a splash of milk for an instant ranch dressing, toss it into Greek yogurt for a zesty dip, or mix it right into ground turkey for the most ridiculously good ranch burgers. I’m already dreaming up a million more ways to use it and trust me, you’ll want to do the same.

Notes
For Ranch Dressing:
  • 2 tablespoons of your ranch mix
  • ½ cup mayo
  • ½ cup milk (start with a little less and thin it out to your liking)
  • 2–3 tablespoons sour cream (optional for a little tangy boost)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice or a splash of white vinegar (brightens everything)
Whisk it all together like you mean it. Chill it for at least 30 minutes so it thickens up and the flavors can really become BFFs. Add more milk if you want it thinner.
For Ranch Dip:
  • 2 tablespoons of your ranch seasoning
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup mayo
Same deal: mix it all together, chill it a bit, then grab your chips, veggies, or even fried pickles and go to town.
Your ½ cup ranch mix will make about 4-5 batches of dressing or dip this way.
Substitutions
If you don’t want zesty ranch dressing, leave out the chipotle powder.
Storage
Stored in an airtight jar or spice container, your ranch seasoning will stay fresh for about 3–4 months. Keep it in a cool, dry spot away from heat and sunlight (aka, not right next to the stove).

Can I double or triple the recipe?

For sure! This ranch mix scales really well. Just store the extra in a jar and scoop out what you need as you go.

Can I use this ranch seasoning as a dry rub?

Yes! It makes an awesome dry rub for chicken, pork chops, or even roasted chickpeas. Just coat the protein or veggies lightly with oil, sprinkle generously with the seasoning, and cook as usual.

Using Ranch Seasoning

This ranch seasoning? Oh, I’m obsessed. I use it on everything. First off, it’s amazing on fries. Like, straight out of the oven while they’re still piping hot. Sprinkle it on and boom, flavor explosion. I’ve tossed it on homemade chips too, and let me tell you, snack time instantly levels up.

But where it really shines? Ranch turkey burgers. Just mix it right into the ground turkey and it does all the heavy lifting. There’s so much flavor, no extra effort. And of course, I use it to whip up a quick dip or dressing. A little mayo, some sour cream, splash of milk or lemon juice, stir it all up, and let it hang out in the fridge. Done. It’s perfect with veggies, chips, or honestly… eaten straight off a spoon (no judgment here).

More Spice Rack Stars!

If you’ve been hanging around my blog for a while, you know ranch seasoning isn’t the only star in my spice rack. I’ve got a whole lineup of homemade seasoning blends that bring serious flavor without the fillers or weird ingredients you’ll find in most store-bought mixes. Whether you’re craving bold, smoky, spicy, or herby, there’s a mix for it.

My Rowdy Ranch Seasoning is perfect for fries, dips, and turkey burgers, but when I want to bring the heat, I reach for my Nashville Hot Chicken Rub or Cajun Seasoning. It’s spicy, a little sweet, and totally addicting on everything from chicken tenders to air-fried cauliflower bites. And if you’re feeling something a little more Mediterranean, my Greek Burger Seasoning is packed with oregano, garlic, and bright citrusy flavor. It’s fantastic in meatballs, burgers, or even sprinkled on roasted potatoes.

For taco night (or honestly, any night), my Taco Seasoning is smoky, savory, and balanced just right. It’s not too salty, not too spicy. It’s great on ground beef, grilled chicken, and even roasted veggies for a plant-based twist. And don’t sleep on the Bold Potato Seasoning Blend. This one’s loaded with dill, tomato powder, tarragon, and other herby goodness that turns roasted potatoes and veggies into something chef’s kiss level.

So whether you’re throwing together a weeknight dinner or meal-prepping lunches for the week, these blends great to have on hand. You can make them in minutes, store them in jars, and reach for them whenever your food needs a little something extra. Homemade spice blends = flavor made easy.
