Steak Sandwich on a Blue Plate

What kind of bread should I use?

I love a good sandwich and there is nothing like a steak sandwich made on homemade sub bread. I suggest you make your own but feel free to buy it if you need to. I understand not everyone has the time. Sub sandwich bread is also called a hoagie. Its the same name for the same bread.

Feel free to toast it. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Slice the bread in half long ways and butter the inside of each half. Place it buttered side down in the skillet for a couple of minutes or until golden brown.

Let’s Get Cooking!

  1. Prep the Steak: Start by seasoning both sides of the raw steak with salt and pepper. Let it sit at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes while you preheat your grill or smoker. This step is crucial because it helps to bring out the flavors and ensures even cooking.
  2. Grill or Smoke: Cook your steak to medium-rare or medium, depending on your preference. For tips on smoking steaks, check out my other post! Once done, let it rest for about 10 minutes. This helps retain all those juicy flavors. Then, slice the steak against the grain into thin strips, about ¼ inch thick.
  3. Caramelize Onions and Mushrooms: In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add your sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook until they’re caramelized and golden brown—this takes about 20-30 minutes, but the rich flavor is totally worth it!
  4. Assemble Your Hoagies: Take your hoagies and cut them in half. Spread horseradish crème on one side and your homemade mayonnaise on the other. Layer on those delicious steak strips, followed by the provolone cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and your favorite toppings.
  5. Enjoy Your Creation: Put the top half of the hoagie on, and you’re ready to dig in! You’ll love the combination of flavors and textures in this steak sandwich.

Tasty Topping Ideas

  • Caramelized Onions: These add a sweet, rich flavor to your sandwich. Cook them low and slow in avocado oil and butter for that perfect deep brown color.
  • Sautéed Mushrooms: Add them halfway through cooking the onions for extra flavor. They should be golden and slightly slimy when done—yum!
  • Cheese Choices: Provolone is my favorite, but feel free to experiment with cheddar, pepper jack, or even Swiss!
  • Horseradish: A must-have for steak sandwiches! Buy some with minimal preservatives or try growing your own.
  • Mayonnaise: I cut my horseradish with mayo for a balanced kick. Homemade mayo is super easy to whip up in under two minutes!
  • Pickled Red Onions: Sweet and tangy, these are a perfect addition. They add a pop of color and flavor that enhances every bite.
  • Veggies Galore: Don’t forget sliced tomatoes, pickles, and spring lettuce mix for freshness and crunch!
