Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (Room temp but still slightly cool)
  • 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese (1 block)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted for smoothness)
  • teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt (balances the sweet)
  • 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream for extra fluff

Instructions

  • Whip ½ cup unsalted butter until light and smooth.
  • Add 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese, 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Whip until smooth.
  • Add 4 cups powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time. Whip until icing is soft and fluffy.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream for extra fluff one teaspoon at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Spread on your favorite cake, cookie or cupcake.
Notes
Make sure both the cream cheese and butter are fully softened before mixing. This ensures a lump-free, smooth frosting.
If you’re piping the frosting onto cupcakes or decorating a cake, pop it in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes after mixing. This will help it firm up and hold its shape.
Substitutions
If you want a sweeter frosting, you can add more powdered sugar. Just keep in mind that the more sugar you add, the stiffer the frosting will get.
Storage
You can make this buttercream ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Just let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before using it, and give it a quick whip with your mixer to bring it back to life.
For longer storage, freeze it for up to three months. When you’re ready to use it, let it thaw in the fridge overnight and whip it again before frosting your desserts.

Recipes that use cream cheese frosting

Cream cheese frosting is the ultimate finishing touch for so many cozy, crowd-pleasing bakes. Its tangy richness pairs perfectly with everything from spiced cakes to fudgy brownies, adding just the right balance of sweet and creamy.

Try it on a buttermilk banana cake, where the soft, moist crumb soaks up every swipe of frosting. It’s also a perfect match for pumpkin bars, and maple apple cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven. Around the holidays, spiked eggnog cupcakes bring all the festive flavor with a swirl of cream cheese frosting, and iced peppermint brownies are a cool, creamy twist on a classic chocolate treat. Whether you’re baking for a potluck, a party, or just because, cream cheese frosting makes it all taste better.
