Skinny Blackberry Margarita Made with Real Fruit
Skinny blackberry margarita made with fresh berries, lime juice, tequila, and agave. A refreshing twist without bottled mix.
August 2025 update: I first shared this blackberry margarita recipe in May of 2024 and can’t believe it has already been over a year. I updated the post with fresh content, added a link to our newest cocktail, Peach Bourbon Margaritas, and included more tips to help you mix the best blackberry margarita at home. Fair warning, Brant’s margaritas have ruined me for ordering them at restaurants because his always taste better. I am perfectly fine with that though because they really are that good.

👩🍳 Why Fresh Blackberries Belong in Your Next Margarita
I picked up a few pounds of blackberries from a local guy who sells produce on Facebook Marketplace. I like to check what he has when our own bushes don’t produce much, and since he freezes them right after picking, the quality is always top notch. I used part of the berries for jam, but the real treat came when Brant turned the rest into margaritas. He has a knack for making the best margaritas, the kind that are strong and smooth without ever leaving me with a headache. His margaritas have ruined restaurant versions for me because nothing else measures up.
These skinny blackberry margaritas are worth making because they strike the perfect balance of flavor and freshness. Instead of bottled mix, they rely on fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and juicy blackberries for a drink that is lighter, brighter, and more refreshing than the usual sugar heavy margarita. The blackberries add natural sweetness and a vibrant color, while the lime keeps it crisp and zesty. Agave syrup ties it all together without weighing it down. The best part is that you can adjust them to your taste. Add more agave if you like it sweeter or squeeze in extra lime if you want it more tart.
Whether you are making a small batch for yourself or a pitcher to share with friends, these skinny blackberry margaritas are a fresh twist on a classic cocktail. We often mix them up for what we call Margarita Friday, but they are just as good for a summer cookout, a casual get together, or anytime you have fresh blackberries that need to be put to good use.

🥣 How to Make a Skinny Blackberry Margarita
Start by adding the fresh blackberries to the bottom of a cocktail shaker with a pinch of pink sea salt. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to press them down until they release their juices and turn into a thick, pulpy mix.
Pour in the tequila, fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and your choice of triple sec, Cointreau, or orange juice. Fill the shaker with ice, close it up, and shake until the outside feels cold to the touch.
Grab a glass and fill it with ice. You can strain the drink if you like it smooth, or pour it all in unstrained to keep the bits of blackberry for extra flavor and texture.
Top the drink with a few fresh blackberries for garnish. If you want to get fancy, you can also run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass and dip it in pink sea salt before you pour.
Serve right away while it’s ice cold.

FAQs
Can I use frozen blackberries for margaritas?
Yes, frozen blackberries work okay. Let them thaw a little before muddling so they release more juice.
Do I have to strain the blackberries?
No, it’s totally up to you. Leaving the pulp makes the margarita more rustic and fruity, while straining gives a smoother, cocktail-bar style finish.
Can I make this margarita without alcohol?
Yes. Replace the tequila and triple sec with orange juice and sparkling water for a refreshing blackberry mocktail
